SBS Friday “Insiders Guide to Love” Part 5 - Big Cat's review for Cool-kid
August 15th 2006 23:24
Hey, Big Cat, whatja do last night?
Hey, Cool-kid. The usual, how about you?
Went down the R'ie. Did I miss much?
SBS had a good show called "Insiders Guide to Love". Last night was the fifth episode. I'd rate it an eight.
Another ethnic show, I 'spose.
Not unless you call country Aussies and Westies ethnic.
What do you mean?
It was about people roughly your age. Apart from saying sex instead of six and yis instead of yes, they could be from Wellington NSW or Sydney's west.
So where was it?
Wellington, New Zealand, in places like Mount Victoria, the coast near the airport, Newtown, Waterloo.
Almost sounds like around Sydney.
Yep, and just as rainy as Sydney was this week.
Tell me about it, Big Cat.
Last night was mainly about Rachel, a feisty young mother of an eight year old boy. No longer with her two-timing partner.
How choice was she?
Check her out here from the pic.
Choice enough. Tell me more.
A sub plot ran about Maxine living with Rachel's ex, Marty. He previously led the two in "marriages" at the same time. There was another sub-plot about Nicole losing Brad's dog, Batman. But I'll stick to Rachel - and her determination to woo Luc.
What did she see in Luc?
His looks and kindness, I think. Choice too, but a bit over-cooked in the head. Ran away from Rachel when she tried to get into his pants.
Bit wee was he?
No, he had this growth like a golf ball below his belly button. And the crazy belief that the growth was the cellular outbreak of his un-born twin, who he had consumed in the womb.
Run that past me again.
Luc was a twin except his twin never got born. Now he believes the twin has started growing in him because he ate him in the womb - crazy, eh!
Whatever.
This was the episode called "Can you accept love". Apart from deciding whether to love Luc despite his crazy beliefs, Rachel also had to grieve her old teacher, a nun, whose belief in Jesus had seemed just as crazy.
Did she love this old nun too?
Yep. Visited her sometimes daily during her confinement. Was there at the moment of her death - in a chapel.
Sounds heavy.
Not really. So well acted, it was very real and very touching.
And?
And there was a really good revelation.
You and your revelations! What was it this time?
That love is accepting.
You can hear that at any church.
Sure, but do you really hear?
I gave up listening to them preacher types.
Precisely. But here's the same lesson where the film-makers put it across in a story that really gets to you.
So what's the juice on this Insiders series?
It's about romantic love, but other kinds of love too - like love of life, love of self, love for children and parents, love of God, love of art, love gone wrong, love lost and unrequited love.
Shit, sounds like someone wrote it out for you.
They did, check it out in SBS and in the film-makers' own website.
